Sentiero Cavloc

The Sentiero Cavloc connects the vastness of the Engadine lake scenery with the calm of the Val Forno. Through larch forests and over frozen moors, the trail leads into an impressive mountain landscape. Forest clearings afford unimpeded views of the Piz da la Margna and Piz Salacina peaks.

The winter hike begins on the Maloja Pass at the Maloja, Cad'Maté bus stop. The 1,812-metre pass connects Bergell with the Engadin and lies on the watershed between the Danube and the Po. From the houses of Maloja, the circular route initially descends gently to Orden before climbing towards Val Forno. Open terrain and sections of woodland characterise this first part of the trail.

After around four kilometres, the route passes directly beside Lägh da Cavloc. Beyond the lake, the ascent continues, reaching the highest point at just under 2,000 metres roughly halfway along the route, near Cima da Murtaira. The trail then descends again through open terrain and woodland, passing the Cavloccio mountain restaurant before returning to Orden.

Allow just under four hours for the eleven kilometres and around 340 metres of ascent. The final section climbs from Orden to the Maloja Pass and ends back in Maloja, a few steps from the Cad'Maté bus stop.
