01/ Overview

The route

Wide open views towards the Bernina Massif and its four thousand metre peaks, plunging views down to the lake plateau below, and soaring flights of intellectual fancy along the Philosophers’ Trail all await snowshoe hikers on the popular Engadin panoramic mountain of Muottas Muragl.

From the Muottas Muragl stop, it is only a few steps to the start of the three-kilometre snowshoe circuit. The route climbs briskly across open slopes, gaining around 190 metres in elevation. After about one kilometre, the highest point is reached at around 2,560 m. From here, the Upper Engadin lies far below, with the Engadin lake plateau also dominating the view.

The snowshoe trail then crosses broad, treeless terrain towards Muottas Muragl. This excursion mountain lies in the Livigno Alps and once again offers unobstructed views across the valley. Beyond the rise, the circuit descends noticeably before returning to the starting point over gentler undulating terrain. After a good hour and a half, Muottas Muragl draws closer again; the mountain restaurant lies near the finish, and the stop is only a few steps away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Snowshoeing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
