01/ Overview
The route
Snowshoe hike through the winter landscape around the small holiday resort of Preda along old muleteer paths, visit Switzerland’s most beautiful spot, the Lai da Palpuogna, and follow the trail through snowy pine forests.
The snowshoe circuit begins at the Preda, Hotel Kulm/Bahnhof stop, on the upper edge of Preda. It initially crosses open terrain before climbing steadily among the trees. After a good half-hour, Lai da Palpuogna comes into view, nestled in the forests of the Albula Alps.
The route passes close to the lakeshore. Lai da Palpuogna lies at 1,918 m, its expanse of water forming the striking centrepiece of the circuit. The trail then continues uphill, reaching its highest point at just under 2,000 m around halfway through the route. Here, the trees give way in places to open ground.
The return route gradually loses elevation and enters the forest once more. Towards the end, the first houses of Preda appear. After a good two hours, the circuit closes back at the stop.
