01/ Overview
The route
Embedded in a romantic wild mountain basin lie the three Murg lakes. Brooks, lakes, waterfalls, peat meadows, rockeries and the protected Swiss pine forest reserve by the lowest of the Murg lakes make this round trip an unforgettable nature experience.
The starting point is the Bachlaui car park near Murg. The route begins away from public transport; the nearest stop, Flumserberg Leist, is almost 3 km away. Before long, the white-red-white marked mountain trail climbs through forest and across open slopes. At Gsponbachfall, it passes through rocky terrain.
The long ascent involves around 950 metres of elevation gain. Near Murgseefurggel, the route reaches its highest point at just under 2,000 m. The trail then descends to the upper Murgsee. Here, the three Murgseen are surrounded by the Glarus Alps. Shortly after the lake, the Berggasthaus Murgsee provides a suitable place for a break.
The return route begins beyond the lake. The mountain trail descends past Murgbachfall, with open pastures and forest alternating farther down. After around 15 km and just over five hours, the circuit closes back at the Bachlaui car park.
