01/ Overview

The route

The hike follows the ridge and offers spectacular views of the mountain world. The variety of colours in the rock layers is just as impressive as their shapes, which have been formed by glaciers and atmospheric conditions. Clear mountain lakes, old forests and the typical Walser culture characterise the route.

The tour begins at the Spitzmeilenhütte at just over 2,000 m, on the edge of the Mad Plateau in the upper Schilstal. The starting point is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, Panüöl, is around 3 km away. From the hut, the white-red-white waymarked mountain trail leads across open pastures into increasingly rocky terrain. One short section is unmarked.

The route leads over the Fansfurggla to its highest point at Oxni, at around 2,400 m. By here, most of the 660 metres of ascent has been completed. The long descent then begins: via the Siezfurggla and later the Lauifurggla, the trail crosses open, barren mountain terrain, steadily losing elevation.

Towards Weisstannen, the gradient becomes more pronounced. After a total of 16 km and a good five and a half hours, around 1,750 metres of descent have been completed. The hike ends in the village near the Weisstannen, Oberdorf stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
