01/ Overview

The route

The winter hike from the native Walser hamlet of Obermutten to Muttner Höhi is two things: peaceful and full of magnificent views. The Muttnerhorn, Piz Beverin, Albula valley and Muttner Höhi, if you make it that far, all give you a stunning view of the Burgenland Domleschg and Heinzenberg.

From the Obermutten, Dorf bus stop, it is only a few steps to the starting point in the small mountain village. Restaurant Alpenrose is located in the village close to the starting point, but around 70 metres off the route described here. The winter hike leaves the houses behind and climbs across open slopes. It gains 140 metres in elevation over roughly one kilometre, so the highest point is reached about halfway along the route.

At Muttner Höhi, the route reaches just over 2,000 metres. Here the ascent eases, and the return leg leads back downhill through the broad, open terrain. Towards the end, the houses of Obermutten draw closer once more. After a total of around two kilometres and just under an hour, the circular hike ends back in the village, around 150 metres from the Obermutten, Dorf bus stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
