01/ Overview
The route
A family favourite in Braunwald: this easy and enjoyable hike runs through the enchanted forests of the Glarus mountain village with no challenging inclines.
The roughly seven-kilometre winter hike begins just outside Braunwald mountain station, by the Braunwald stop. The route initially winds between the houses through the village and out onto open meadows and pastures. The elevation profile remains gentle: a total ascent of around 200 metres is spread across the route without any prolonged climb. Short ascents are repeatedly followed by flatter sections before the trail gradually enters the forest.
Around halfway, the route reaches its highest point at approximately 1,270 metres, near Tüfels-Chilchli. From here, it turns back towards Braunwald. Forest and open terrain alternate as the few metres of elevation gained are lost again. After just over two hours, the village houses reappear. The winter hike ends after around two and a half hours at Braunwald mountain station, a few steps from the Braunwald stop.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
