01/ Overview

The route

A magnificent high-altitude route starting in Bretaye, with views of Mont Blanc and the Vaud Alps. Snowshoe trekkers can also explore scenery that features tranquil Alpine lakes, broad snow-covered mountain pastures, forests, clearings and hamlets.

The five-kilometre snowshoe circuit begins at the Col de Bretaye, directly by the Col-de-Bretaye stop. Initially, the route crosses open terrain, with Lac de Bretaye close by. After the Restaurant du Lac de Bretaye, it descends gradually towards the forest.

By the Restaurant Lac des Chavonnes, the lowest section of the circuit has almost been reached. Shortly afterwards, the snowshoe route runs directly alongside Lac des Chavonnes, an alpine lake in the canton of Vaud. The ascent then begins between forest and open slopes. With no major changes in gradient but climbing steadily, the route gains height once more.

In the final third, the highest point is reached at 1,823 m near Roc à l’Ours. The circuit then leads back across open terrain to the Col de Bretaye. After a little over two hours, the loop closes at the Col-de-Bretaye stop, just a few steps from the starting point.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Snowshoeing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
