01/ Overview

The route

A fantastic snowshoe trail starting in Bouquetins, accessible from Villars via cogwheel railway. Along the way: many stretches of forest, the Maison de Montagne de Bretaye founded by General Guisan, and a unique backdrop with Mont Blanc and the Vaud Alps.

The snowshoe hike begins above Villars at the Bouquetins stop. The route starts with a short climb, reaching its highest point near L’Aiguille at around 1,800 m. Rocky terrain dominates the surroundings before the trail enters the forest.

From there, it is mostly downhill. Between trees and open meadows, the route steadily loses elevation; brief uphill sections add up to around 120 metres of ascent. Just over halfway, the Auberge Col de Soud stands directly beside the trail. From here, the descent continues through forest and across open ground until the first houses of Villars come into view.

After just over two hours, the five-kilometre snowshoe hike ends in Villars. The finish is not directly served by public transport; the nearest stop, Villars-sur-Ollon, Hôtels, is around 500 m away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Snowshoeing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
