01/ Overview
The route
Fancy nature, peace, and quiet? This trail guarantees relaxation in the forest of Chandolin. It leads past a small hamlet and the Alpine meadows at Chandolin. Near the Illhornhütte (hut), the views of the valley floor and its 4,000-metre peaks are spectacular.
The five-kilometre snowshoe circuit starts at the Chandolin, poste bus stop in the heart of the village. Le Chalet is close to the starting point. The route initially climbs gently between the houses, soon leaves Chandolin behind and reaches the Observatoire de la Faune at the edge of the forest.
Open glades and sections of forest then alternate. The trail continues uphill, climbing around 220 metres in total; the Cabane de l’Illhorn lies a little off the circuit. After around three kilometres, the route reaches its highest point at 2,170 m, close to the Illhorn. From here, it descends again and sweeps in a wide arc across open terrain back towards the forest.
On the final section, the circuit once again approaches the houses of Chandolin. After just over two hours, the snowshoe tour ends back at the Chandolin, poste bus stop.
