Percorso Passo San Bernardino

Following a charming up and down path, this trail leads through glacier-formed mounds to the San Bernardino pass. It is the most extensive landscape of this type throughout Switzerland and thus of national importance.

From the S. Bernardino, Chiesa Rotonda bus stop, it is only a few steps to the starting point in San Bernardino. The snowshoe route leaves the houses behind and initially climbs through forest, then across open terrain. The ascent to the high pass landscape totals around 560 metres. After approximately four kilometres, the highest point is reached at around 2,120 m; amid open slopes and rocky terrain, the village already seems far away.

The route then descends towards the San Bernardino Pass. At Laghetto Moesola, it reaches the small lake at the top of the pass and leads directly past the Ristorante Ospizio San Bernardino. This is where the main European watershed and the linguistic boundary between German and Italian meet. The return route sweeps in a broad arc through the barren high-altitude landscape, later re-enters the forest and steadily loses elevation. After a total of around ten kilometres and just over five hours, the first houses of San Bernardino come into view; near the Chiesa Rotonda, the circuit ends back at the bus stop.
