Pragelpass-Weg

The Pragelpass lives from its eventful history, but also from its beauty between the two different worlds of the cantons Schwyz and Glarus. A tranquil hike with the Schwammhöchi as an atmospheric finale.

From the Schwyz, Drei Könige bus stop, the route leads through the village centre and past the late Baroque parish church of St Martin. Open meadows and woodland soon begin to alternate. The long traverse into the Muotatal follows yellow-marked hiking trails. After Muotathal, the main ascent begins; between pastures and woodland, the trail steadily gains height.

About halfway along, the route reaches the Pragel Pass. At around 1,550 m, it is the highest point and links the Muotatal with the Klöntal. A long descent to Vorauen follows. Farther down the valley, Klöntalersee lies directly on the route. This natural lake was further impounded by an earth-fill dam, adding a tranquil note before the long final section. The trail leads via Riedern to Glarus, past the Stadtkirche and on to the railway station. Around 48 km, almost 15 hours and approximately 1,600 metres of ascent make this pass hike an endurance undertaking.
