01/ Overview
The route
From Splügen to Nufenen, along the young Rhine and in the shadow of the Einshorn: discover the imposing mountain backdrops of the Rheinwald on this cross-country trail along the valley floor.
The twelve-kilometre trail starts in Splügen, around 500 m from the Splügen, Dorf bus stop. From there, the circuit climbs gently across the open expanses of the Rheinwald and skirts the surroundings of Medels. The Reformed church stands around 300 m off the route, while the Walserhof is not passed directly either. Between the open areas, sections of woodland add variety to the landscape.
After about halfway, the trail reaches its highest point at around 1'540 m. Nufenen is now nearby; its Reformed church stands a good 300 m away and is not visited by the route. The trail then continues over gently undulating terrain, once again passing through open countryside and woodland. In total, the circuit covers around 170 metres of ascent and takes just over three hours before ending back at the starting point in Splügen.
