01/ Overview
The route
Between a moated castle, a nature education area and Wauwilermoos, this circular route combines open meadows, short stretches of woodland and quiet waterside paths with sweeping views as far as the Pilatus range.
The approximately 15 km circular hike through the Lucerne Plateau begins at the Ettiswil, Post bus stop. Beyond the Ludwigskapelle, the moated Schloss Wyher stands directly beside the path. First mentioned in 1304, it is now a protected historic monument. The castle garden offers an opportunity for a first rest before the Buchwald nature education area, set in a former gravel pit, reveals habitats for amphibians, insects and birds.
The path then climbs through meadows and short stretches of woodland to the highest point at around 650 m. Near Bloseberg, views open out across Grosswangen to the Pilatus range. The route then descends to Kottwil and Seewagen, accompanied for long stretches by the Rot.
Across the flat Wauwil plain, wetlands and a field of reedmace shape the landscape along the route, while the observation tower offers views over the nature reserve. After the Rot and Wigger converge, the circular route follows the riverside path towards Hostris. It then passes through the Wässermatte and the Platz des Dialoges to the Sakramentskapelle before returning to Ettiswil.

How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
