01/ Overview

The route

A short geological circuit above Krauchthal: the Sandstone Trail climbs to the wooded Chrützfluh and returns to the village, partly away from the marked hiking trail network.

From the Krauchthal, Post bus stop, it is around 250 m to the starting point by the Hirschen. The Sandstone Trail leaves the houses behind and initially climbs along a marked hiking trail. Meadows and open slopes characterise the first section before the route enters the forest.

In the forest, the geological circuit continues towards Kreuzfluh. The longer middle section lies away from the marked hiking trail network and therefore requires careful navigation. Via Bäichle and Banziloch, the route continues to gain elevation. It reaches its highest point near Chrützfluh at around 710 m, with the sandstone landscape forming the central theme of the trail.

The circuit then descends through the forest. Towards the end, it rejoins the hiking trail, emerges from the trees into the meadows and leads back among the houses of Krauchthal. After just over an hour, it ends near the starting point; the Krauchthal, Post bus stop is around 260 m away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
