01/ Overview
The route
Hiking from Bern (Bärengraben) to Rüeggisberg you continually catch glimpses of the snow-capped trio of the Eiger Mönch & Jungfrau above the forest.
The approximately 22-kilometre hike begins at the Bern, Bärenpark bus stop. The route skirts the Aare and gradually leaves the city behind. It continues via Wabern into the Gurtenwald, where the first sustained ascent leads through shady terrain. Before long, stretches of forest alternate with open meadows and settlements.
Beyond Kehrsatz, the route continues into gentle hill country. Following waymarked hiking trails throughout, it leads steadily up and down via Englisberg and through the Chüliwilwald. Around Ober- and Niedermuhlern, pastures and fields dominate the landscape. Towards the end, there is another steep ascent: near Bütschelegg, the hike reaches its highest point at around 980 m. From there, it is not far to Mättiwil in the municipality of Rüeggisberg. The Rüeggisberg, Mättiwil bus stop is right by the destination. Stamina is required for this tour of just over six hours, with around 860 metres of elevation gain.
