Sardona-Welterbe-Weg, Stage 1/6

From the sports mecca of Filzbach at the Walensee lake, the journey takes you high into the Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona. Here, impressive geophenomena make it possible to witness the formation of the mountains. Narrow, rocky valleys alternate with spectacular views of the untamed mountain world before you reach the three Murg lakes.

From the Filzbach, Sportzentrum bus stop, the trail leads out of the village and climbs steadily through forest and across open pastures. For the first section it remains mostly broad; passing Berggasthaus Habergschwänd, the route continues to gain elevation. After just over two and a half hours, Talalpsee lies directly beside the trail, providing a tranquil counterpoint to the long ascent.

Beyond the lake, the hike joins a mountain trail marked in white-red-white. The forests are left behind, and open alpine pastures and rocky sections now dominate the landscape. The path leads over Mürtschenfurggel and continues in a steady succession of ascents and descents to Murgseefurggel. Here, at just under 2,000 metres, the route reaches its highest point.

The mountain trail now descends to Oberer Murgsee, one of the three Murgseen amid the Glarus Alps. A short while later, the approximately 16-kilometre hike ends at Berggasthaus Murgsee. Around 1,650 metres of ascent should be allowed for on this hike of just over six hours. The destination is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, Wart, is a good five kilometres away.
