01/ Overview

The route

Equipped with walking sticks, a hike to the «Zigerstöckli» - along a theme and discovery trail where ten stations reveal the history, makings and marketing of the famous «Glarner» Sapasago cheese (also known as Schabziger).

From the Habergschwänd stop, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail initially climbs across open Alpine pastures. At Mittlere Nüenalp, the first refreshment stop lies directly on the route. The ascent then continues, reaching the highest point at around 1,440 m after just over two kilometres.

The hike now alternates between meadows and woodland. The trail gradually loses altitude as it leads towards the settlement of Mullern. Mullerä-Beizli lies close to the route and is ideal for a break. Beyond Mullern, the trail reaches its lowest section before climbing gently once more.

The route finally leads through open countryside and further stretches of woodland to Mollis, Oberruestel. The Fronalp (GL), Unter Stafel stop is located directly at the destination. Just under two and a half hours should be allowed for the seven kilometres, with around 460 metres of ascent.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
