Sarnersee-Uferweg

Engelberg – a well-known and popular excursion destination. This round tour leads from the impressive monastery to the picturesque River Aa and constantly affords wonderful views of idyllic rural landscapes and the spectacular mountain panorama.

From Giswil railway station, the trail first leads through the village and climbs almost imperceptibly to the route’s highest point at around 490 m. The houses are soon left behind as the hike continues northwards between meadows and pastures. At the Landgasthof Zollhaus, the trail heads farther into the open valley and reaches Ewil.

Scattered settlements then alternate with open countryside as the route continues almost level towards Sachseln. The village marks roughly the halfway point of the hike, which takes just over two hours. Shortly afterwards, Sarnersee comes into view, and the trail leads directly to its shore. The elongated lake lies at around 470 m and now dominates the open landscape.

In the final third, the first houses of Sarnen draw closer. From the lakeshore, the route enters the built-up area and continues to the village centre without any significant ascent. After around nine kilometres, the hike ends at Sarnen railway station.
