01/ Overview
The route
Untracked and unmarked, the snowshoe tour leads from the Niederbauen mountain station to Niderbauen-Chulm. Across open slopes, views of Lake Lucerne and the Alps accompany the strenuous ascent.
The cable car from Emmetten leads to the starting point at the Niederbauen mountain station. From there, the snowshoe route climbs through open terrain. It is neither tracked nor marked and therefore requires confident navigation; checking the avalanche bulletin before setting out is essential. Wildlife quiet zones and wildlife protection areas must be respected along the way. As the route gains height, the view opens out across Lake Lucerne and towards the Alps.
After around two kilometres and almost 400 metres of ascent, the route reaches Niderbauen-Chulm, its highest point at just over 1,900 m. The summit lies on the cantonal border between Nidwalden and Uri. The circuit then leads back across the broad slopes. A little over two hours should be allowed for the entire snowshoe tour. The circuit ends at Berggasthaus Niederbauen, with the Niederbauen mountain station just a few steps farther on.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
