01/ Overview
The route
A short snowshoe circuit on the open slopes of Niederbauen: first descending to Unterst Hütte, then climbing via Schönenbühel to the highest point, with constant views of Lake Lucerne and the Alps.
The Emmetten–Niederbauen cable car takes snowshoers to the starting point at Berggasthaus Niederbauen. Before setting off, checking the latest avalanche bulletin and wildlife protection zones is an essential part of planning. From the mountain inn, the circuit of just under five kilometres crosses the open slopes of Niederbauen towards Hohfad. Lake Lucerne lies far below, with the Alps rising in layers beyond. Passing Hölloch, the route descends to Unterst Hütte and reaches the lowest part of the circuit at just over 1,400 m.
The ascent to Schönenbühel then begins. Open terrain also characterises this section of the snowshoe tour. The route continues uphill via Tritt and, near the end, reaches its highest point close to Gütsch at just under 1,600 m. From there, a short descent leads back to the Niederbauen cable car station and the mountain inn, where the circuit ends after just over two hours and coffee awaits.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
