01/ Overview
The route
Follow the Schwarzwasser upstream up to the Bütschelbach confluence. Climb in a landscape of harrows and rifts until you can view the Gantrisch and the Jura. Cross the wooden bridge in the Stieglenau, walk uphill through pastures and forests towards the church of Wahlern and Schwarzenburg.
From Schwarzwasserbrücke railway station, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail initially leads into the forest. After reaching the lowest point of the hike near the start, a longer ascent begins. Slightly off the trail among the trees stand the ruins of Riedburg, bearing witness to a 14th-century medieval hilltop castle. Open meadows and pastures soon begin to alternate with further stretches of forest.
About halfway along, the trail reaches its highest point at around 840 m. The terrain remains undulating thereafter: the route continues through the open countryside in a succession of climbs and descents, gaining a total of around 540 metres in elevation. Towards the end, Wahlern draws closer. The trail passes the church and continues to Schwarzenburg. After 11 kilometres and just over three and a half hours, the hike ends at Schwarzenburg railway station.
