01/ Overview
The route
From Lake Hallwil, the trail climbs through villages, meadows and forests to the Lindenberg. Cultural traces along the way, the Horben plateau and views of the Central Alps characterise this long day hike.
The day hike begins at the Seengen, Schloss Hallwyl bus stop, near the moated Schloss Hallwyl. A short path leads to Lake Hallwil before the route leaves the lakeshore and climbs through meadows and woodland. Along the way, a reconstructed pile dwelling and the remains of a Roman villa recall the area’s earliest settlements.
From Sarmenstorf, the broad hiking trail continues uphill. After sections of woodland and open farmland, it reaches Bettwil, the highest municipality in the canton of Aargau. The parish church of St. Josef stands slightly off the route. The trail then climbs steadily via Oberschongau onto the long ridge of the Lindenberg; a short section lies outside the marked hiking trail network.
Near the end of the hike, the highest point is reached in the forest at around 830 m. Soon the Horben plateau opens up, offering views of the Central Alps. The destination is the Alpwirtschaft Horben, near Schloss Horben and the chapel of St. Wendelin. The roughly five-hour route ends here; the nearest stop, Brunnwil, Weiler, is around one and a half kilometres away.

How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
