The route
This varied hike leads to the Silvrettahütte cabin through impressive landscapes with far-reaching panoramic views of mountain peaks and Alpine flora. The Glacier Trail (Gletscherlehrpfad) sheds light on how the glacier came about and the consequences of climate change.
The circular hike begins in Sardasca, a remote starting point near Klosters. There is no public transport connection in the immediate vicinity; the Klosters, Monbiel Parkplatz stop is around 7 km away. From the valley floor, the white-red-white waymarked mountain trail climbs steeply through open pastures, reaching the Silvrettahütte at 2'341 m after the first long ascent.
The SAC hut lies below the Silvrettagletscher and offers views back into the Prättigau. Beyond it, the terrain becomes increasingly barren and rocky. The trail continues to climb, reaching the highest point of the route at around 2'560 m. Rock and broad mountain slopes characterise this section before the route turns back down towards the valley.
The long descent leads across open slopes back to Sardasca. The 12 km route involves around 1'100 metres of ascent and takes just over five hours. The appeal of this mountain hike lies in the contrasts between alpine pastures, a stop at the hut and rugged high-alpine terrain.
