ViaValtellina

Wine from Veltlin has been imported to Graubunden and Voralberg for hundreds of years. One of the pack-mule routes led from Veltlin via Davos into Montafon. The historic route has been revived as the ViaValtellina, an attractive long-distance hiking route.

The long-distance hike begins in Gargellen and crosses open alpine pastures to the Schlappiner Joch at around 2,200 m, where it crosses the border between Vorarlberg and Graubünden. After Schlappin, the route descends to Klosters. It continues via Schwarzsee and the Wolfgang Pass to Lake Davos, before following the long Dischmatal valley and the Dischmabach.

From Dürrboden, the mountain trail climbs steeply to the Scaletta Pass. At around 2,600 m, this is the highest point of the tour; the pass also divides the drainage basins of the Rhine and the Inn. The route leads through Val Susauna into the broad Upper Engadin, then through its villages and the Stazerwald to Pontresina.

The next long mountain trail reaches the lakes at the Bernina Pass. At Lago Bianco, the extended descent begins via Alp Grüm and Cavaglia into Val Poschiavo. Beyond Poschiavo, wooded slopes alternate with open sections until the route ends in Tirano after a total of around 135 kilometres. Just under 48 hours of hiking and around 7,000 metres of ascent are estimated for the entire route.
