01/ Overview
The route
From Montafon over the Alpine pastures of Valzifenz and the 2202m-high Schlappiner Joch to the former Walser settlement of Schlappin in Prättigau. Interesting introduction to the history of Montafon in the Schruns Local History Museum.
The cross-border hike begins in Gargellen on the Austrian side. The starting point is some distance from public transport; the nearest stop, St. Antönien, Gafia Edelweiss, is around five kilometres away. The waymarked hiking trail climbs steadily out of the valley across open meadows and pastures. Over the nine kilometres, it gains a total of around 840 metres in elevation.
In the second half, the hiking trail becomes a mountain hiking trail marked white-red-white. The ascent now climbs more steeply towards the pass. After just under three hours, the route reaches its highest point at Schlappiner Joch, at around 2,200 m. The pass connects Vorarlberg with Graubünden, and the hike crosses the national border here.
Beyond the pass, the descent begins. The mountain hiking trail loses around 580 metres in elevation across open slopes and ends in Klosters Schlappin after a little over four hours. The destination is also not directly served by public transport: Saaser Alp Donnerstein is around one kilometre away.
