Walserweg, Stage 19/19

The long, ten-hour hike leads over narrow paths along a steep slope. Craggy limestone rocks soar high next to the track. Ice-cold glacial lakes, glacial erratics and boulders, imposing mountain peaks and the typical scattered Walser settlements on hilly pastures accompany this hike.

The long ascent into the Rätikon begins at the St. Antönien, Platz bus stop. The mountain trail, marked white-red-white throughout, soon leaves the scattered houses behind and crosses open pastures to Partnun. Nestled between steep mountain slopes, Partnunsee lies directly on the route. Above the lake, the terrain becomes increasingly rocky. After a good three hours, Carschinahütte is reached at 2,236 metres. This Swiss Alpine Club hut offers sweeping views back into the St. Antöniertal.

The mountain trail crosses the Carschinafurgga and continues through the barren landscape in a steady succession of ascents and descents. At Schweizer Tor, the border between Graubünden and Vorarlberg is crossed. Shortly afterwards, the route reaches its highest point at Verajoch, at around 2,330 metres. The long descent then begins across open slopes to Brand. At around 31 kilometres, with 1,550 metres of ascent and a walking time of just over ten hours, the tour demands considerable stamina. There is no public transport stop in the immediate vicinity of the destination; Eggli (Fanas), the nearest listed stop, is around 12 kilometres away.
