01/ Overview

The route

Across moorland slopes and past gnarled mountain pines, this circular hike climbs from Sörenberg to Haglere. At the summit cross, views extend over the village and the surrounding mountains before the trail returns via Mittlist Gfäl.

From the Sörenberg, Schulhaus bus stop, it is only a few steps to the village centre. The trail leaves Sörenberg and initially climbs through open pastureland via Obersörenberg and Satz. The circular route, just over nine kilometres long, involves around 775 metres of ascent, making for a sustained climb.

Near Alpweid, moorland plants and gnarled mountain pines characterise the Haglere nature reserve. Wet sections of trail may be encountered around the alp. The mountain trail then continues to Teufimattsattel and climbs onwards to Haglere, which lies on the cantonal border between Lucerne and Obwalden. At the summit cross, views open up over Sörenberg and the surrounding mountains; near the highest point, the route reaches around 1,940 m.

After a little over two hours, the descent via Mittlist Gfäl begins. It leads first across open slopes, then through forest and along a broader hiking trail back to the first houses. After around four and a quarter hours, the circular hike ends back in the centre of Sörenberg, close to the bus stop and Restaurant Bäckerstube.

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
