01/ Overview

The route

This winter hike across the high St. Karl and Oberberg plateaus guarantees some truly impressive views. Enjoy the mountains of central Schwyz as you pass snow-topped coniferous forests and craggy rock formations.

The signposted six-kilometre winter hiking circuit starts at the Oberberg St. Karl bus stop. Initially, the route descends across open terrain. After around one kilometre, it reaches its lowest point; this is followed by a longer ascent, first along the edge of moorland, then between stretches of woodland and pastures.

About halfway round, the route reaches its highest point at 1,364 m. Chli Schijen lies just under half a kilometre off the route, while Ibergeregg with its Marienkapelle is likewise not passed directly. The pass connects Schwyz and Oberiberg.

The route then descends, with steady ups and downs, through woodland and once again across open terrain. After around two and a half hours and a total elevation gain of about 360 metres, the circuit ends back at St. Karl, directly beside the Oberberg St. Karl bus stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
