01/ Overview
The route
A substantial part of this circuitous route proceeds along an historic footpath - the path along which the first settlers came into Samnaun Valley. Thanks to the diversity of the route one learns much about the different Samnaun regions.
The circular hike begins in the heart of the village at the Samnaun-Dorf, Post bus stop. The mountain trail, marked in white-red-white, soon leaves the houses behind and initially climbs through forest before continuing across open slopes. Around 880 metres of ascent must be tackled in total; as the elevation increases, the terrain becomes barer and rockier.
About halfway along, the route reaches the Stammer Joch. Shortly afterwards, at around 2,660 m, lies the highest point of the hike. Open pastures and rock characterise this uppermost section. The long descent leads back into vegetated terrain and finally to the first houses of Samnaun.
Towards the end, the trail passes the Maria Hilf chapel before re-entering the village. After around eleven kilometres and just over four hours, the circuit ends at the Samnaun-Dorf, Post bus stop. This mountain trail throughout requires good fitness and sure-footedness.
