01/ Overview

The route

This hike is the classic route in the Stockhorn region. On the diverse route you can enjoy special, exciting views. The start and end of the route are the mountain and middle stations of the Stockhornbahn railway.

The short descent begins at the Stockhorn at just over 2,100 m, not far from the Stockhorn Panorama Restaurant. The mountain trail, marked in white-red-white, leaves the rocky summit area and descends across open slopes. The route loses altitude quickly, with only brief uphill sections interrupting the descent. With every step, rock faces and broad pastures increasingly dominate the landscape.

Around halfway along, the trail reaches the Oberstockenalp mountain inn. Beyond this point, the terrain becomes progressively greener, and the mountain trail gradually gives way to a more comfortable hiking path. Towards the end, the route enters the forest and leads directly past the Hinterstockensee. Lying below the Stockhorn, the lake provides a tranquil final highlight before the destination. Shortly afterwards, the Chrindi intermediate station and the stop of the same name are reached. The roughly three-kilometre route takes just over an hour and involves around 540 metres of descent.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
