01/ Overview
The route
Short, steep ascent from Chrindi to the Stockhorn: two mountain lakes, rocky ridges and a panorama at just over 2,100 m. Demanding, can be completed in just over two hours.
The path begins in Thal (Chrindi) and first runs through open terrain. Passing the Walpersbergflue it reaches the Hinterstockensee, which lies below the Stockhorn within the municipality of Erlenbach im Simmental. The route alternates between meadows and stands of woodland and soon leads to the Oberstockensee, also a lake below the Stockhorn.
Beyond the mountain lake the climb becomes steeper. Passing Gugeni and the mountain inn Oberstockenalp the path quickly gains altitude. In the final metres the way leads over more rocky slopes to the Baachegg and up to the Stockhorn with its panoramic restaurant. The route is short but exhausting: around 6 km, roughly 600 vertical metres and just over two hours, rated as difficult. The ascent is rewarded with open alpine terrain and wide views of the Bernese Oberland ridge.
