01/ Overview

The route

There are many valley walks, but Diemtigtal from Oey to Schwenden is unique and deserves the highest award. The path follows the Filderich and Chirel valley streams and takes you through forests and meadows.

The approximately 16 km hike begins right by the Oey-Diemtigen stop. The yellow-waymarked trail leaves the houses of Oey behind and climbs gradually through the forest. Near the start, the Katzenloch barbecue site lies close to the route. Shady stretches of forest then alternate with meadows and pastures, while the ascent remains steady for much of the way.

After a good two hours, the trail passes Restaurant Riedli and continues to Zwischenflüh. By this point, around half the distance has been covered. The route continues up the valley as the forest increasingly gives way to open terrain. The total ascent is around 700 metres, with few substantial downhill sections over the four-and-a-half-hour walking time.

Towards the end, the houses of Grimmialp come into view. The trail climbs once more, reaching its highest point at the destination at around 1,230 m. Just a few steps away is the Schwenden i.D., Grimmialp stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
