01/ Overview
The route
This trail zigzags across the prestigious Lavaux terraced vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Created through wine-related activities over the years, this land-scape and its typical villages are of universal beauty.
The approximately eleven-kilometre hike begins right by the St-Saphorin stop. Lake Geneva is only a few steps away before the yellow-marked hiking trail climbs through Saint-Saphorin. Between open hillsides and small settlements, the route leads to Rivaz and onwards towards Epesses. Along the way, there are frequent unobstructed views across the lake. Picnic areas near Treytorrens and Epesses invite a break.
After Riex, the trail climbs once more. Near the Signal de Grandvaux, the hike reaches its highest point at just over 530 m. It then continues through Chenaux and Grandvaux, passing the Temple de Grandvaux. Via Villette and Aran, the route proceeds westwards over gently undulating terrain. The final kilometres lead through increasingly built-up areas to Châtelard and finally to Lutry railway station. Just over three hours should be allowed for this varied route, which involves around 440 metres of ascent.
