01/ Overview
The route
Curved arched bridge dating from 1487 near Bischofszell. Heiligkreuz Church with former fortified tower. The Nollen, the highest rise in Thurgau, with sweeping views from the Bodensee to the Alps. Finally the old town of Wil – well worth seeing.
The hike begins at the Bischofszell Stadt stop. Right from the outset, the route passes Johanneskirche and Schloss Bischofszell before leaving the built-up area. Following marked hiking trails throughout, it continues into a mosaic of open meadows, fields and woodland. The 21 kilometres take just over five hours and involve around 520 metres of ascent.
Between small hamlets, the trail climbs in a steady succession of ups and downs to the heights near Hosenruck. Close to the Nollen, the highest point of the hike is reached at around 730 metres. The hill rises from a plateau between the Thurgau and St. Gallen sections of the Thur valley. The route then descends again and follows the Dorfbach Zuzwil for a short distance.
Across more meadows and through the woodland near Höchi, Wil draws closer. Towards the end, the trail passes the Hof zu Wil, once the seat of the Prince-Abbot of St. Gallen, and continues through the old town. Shortly afterwards, the hike ends at Wil SG railway station.
