Thurgauer Panoramaweg, Stage 1/2

Worth seeing: Hagenwil moated castle with knight’s hall, granary, courtyard tavern, Biedermeier parlour and own wine. After crossing the River Sitter with the last ferry left in Canton Thurgau, the route leads along a root-covered path through a marshland nature reserve.

From the Amriswil stop, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail initially leads through the town and out into the open countryside. The route climbs gently between meadows, fields and small settlements. After around three kilometres, Hagenwil Castle comes into view, a moated castle immediately beside the trail.

Open sections then alternate with short stretches of woodland. Later, the Weierbach accompanies the hike. The Horber Weier and Horbacher Weier lie directly on the route, adding tranquil expanses of water to the hamlet-dotted landscape. The trail continues through the Büelhölzli to the Hauptwiler Weiher and on to Hauptwil.

Beyond the village, there is another ascent. Near Bööl, the hike reaches its highest point at around 610 m. The trail then descends to Bischofszell, where the Bischofszell Stadt stop is close to the finish. A little over four hours should be allowed for the 16 kilometres.
