01/ Overview
The route
Across lush meadows, between mighty fir trees to «Energy Mountain» and the wind farm with its rotating propellers, visible from afar, and solar panels: Switzerland’s largest plant for renewable energy! Then a steep descent to St-Imier.
From Saignelégier railway station, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail leads out of the village. Crossing open meadows and pastures, it winds through the gently undulating Jura landscape to Le Roselet. The route continues with gentle ascents and descents to Les Breuleux. After around two hours, the first major section of the 20-kilometre route has been completed.
Beyond Les Breuleux, pastures and woodland alternate as the trail gradually climbs higher. At Mont Soleil, the hike reaches its highest point at around 1,290 m. The Jura summit lies north of Saint-Imier, and the route passes close to its highest point. The long descent then begins through predominantly wooded terrain.
At the Belvédère viewpoint, the view opens up once more before the trail continues to lose altitude. Towards the end, the first houses of Saint-Imier appear between the trees. The route passes through the town, going by the Collégiale de Saint-Imier, and ends after just over five hours at St-Imier railway station.
