01/ Overview
The route
The Triesenberg „philosophers' path“ is a hike along natural trails in the rich cultural landscape of the Walser people. A stop for apple pie at the Masescha mountain inn is definitely recommended. At Gaflei, the view of the Rhine valley and the eastern Switzerland alpine world is breathtaking.
The circular hike begins in Rizlina above Triesenberg. The starting point is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, in Sevelen, is around 4.5 km away. Initially, the route follows a yellow-waymarked hiking trail through alternating open meadows, pastures and woodland.
After the lowest point of the circuit, the main ascent begins. The path becomes a white-red-white-waymarked mountain hiking trail and now gains significant elevation. Sections of woodland alternate with open terrain until, after around seven kilometres, the highest point is reached near Geissberg at just under 1,600 m. The total ascent is around 620 metres.
The route then heads downhill again. The mountain trail gives way to an easier hiking trail, leading through the familiar mix of woodland and pasture back to Rizlina. A good three and a half hours should be allowed for the eleven-kilometre circuit.
