01/ Overview

The route

A night-time city walk from Lake Zurich to the industrial quarter: lighting designs from the Plan Lumière accompany the lanes of the Old Town, the banks of the Limmat and the viaduct as far as Hardbrücke.

The city walk begins on the shores of Lake Zurich, near the Zürich Bellevue (See) stop. Between Münsterbrücke, Sechseläutenplatz, the opera house and Quaibrücke, site-specific lighting designs draw attention to the Plan Lumière, which shapes Zurich’s night-time cityscape. The route follows Stadthausquai and crosses Münsterhof to Fraumünster, before continuing through the lanes of the Old Town. Almost imperceptibly, the walk reaches its highest point at around 425 m.

Via Rudolf-Brun-Brücke and Lindenhof, the route returns to the Limmat, then continues across Bahnhofbrücke and Walchebrücke towards the industrial quarter. At Limmatplatz, the scenery changes from the historic city centre to a more densely built-up urban area. The route joins the Viadukt footpath and later follows the tailrace canal for a short stretch. After around five kilometres and just over an hour and a half, the walk ends beneath Hardbrücke at Escher-Wyss-Platz, near the stop of the same name.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
