01/ Overview
The route
This city walk presents Zürich from a child’s perspective: from the lake through the winding lanes of the Old Town and up to Villa Tobler, accompanied by stories and traces of times gone by.
The roughly four-kilometre circular walk leads from Zürich Stadelhofen railway station to the opera house and Lake Zürich. It crosses Sechseläutenplatz to Quaibrücke, followed by Bürkliplatz and Bauschänzli. At Fraumünster, one of the four Reformed churches in the Old Town, the maze of city-centre lanes begins. Co-created by schoolchildren, the walk offers an unusual perspective on familiar places; this also includes the audio play “Salzwassertee”.
The route winds through the Old Town to Wasserkirche and continues towards Lindenhof. Along the way, historic houses, fountains and squares are clustered close together. Via Neumarkt and the Hirschengraben schoolhouse, the path climbs to Villa Tobler. Nearby, the route reaches its highest point at around 430 metres.
It then heads downhill again. The towers of Grossmünster stand close to the route before the final lanes lead back to the lake. After just over an hour, the walk ends at Bellevue, a few steps from the tram stop.
