01/ Overview

The route

When the work is done, it’s time for fun: After a steep section, the trail leads over a scenic ridge to the historic Surenenpass. The rock bastions on Brunnistock and the valley basin are imposing. A varied valley trail leads to the monastery town of Engelberg.

From the Altdorf UR, Telldenkmal bus stop, the route passes through the cantonal capital and continues to Attinghausen. The long ascent begins beyond the last houses. The mountain trail climbs through forest and across open alpine pastures to Chräienhöreli. Higher up, the terrain becomes rockier before reaching the Surenenpass, one of the alpine mule tracks of the Urner Alps.

Shortly after the pass, near Eggenmanndli, the hike reaches its highest point at around 2,300 m. The mountain trail then descends eastwards, initially through barren terrain and later once again across pastures. The descent continues past the Chapel of St Antonius and St Wendelin; a little further on, the trail passes the Stäuberfall waterfall.

In the final third, open slopes alternate with forest, and the trail gradually becomes wider. At the Maria im Holz chapel, Engelberg draws closer. The route continues through the first houses, past Engelberg Abbey Church and finally to the destination in Engelberg, just a few steps from the bus stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
