01/ Overview

The route

Hike through the "Wildi" on Mount Rophaien, where the ancient tradition of wild haymaking continues today. Alpine farmers scythe the steep pastures and send the hay hurtling down into the valley on ziplines. 15 panels offer interesting facts about this craft. Equally impressive: views of the valley floor and Lake Uri.

It is only a few steps from the Eggberge bus stop to the starting point. Right from the outset, the mountain trail passes the viewpoint and Bistro Eggberge. It then leaves the small settlement behind and continues across open meadows and pastures. Vierwaldstättersee lies far below as the route approaches the Rophaien in a steady succession of ascents and descents.

After around four kilometres, the trail reaches its highest point at about 1,550 m. The striking summit of the Rophaien, with its cross, lies away from the route. From here, the route is predominantly downhill: the white-red-white waymarked path enters the forest and loses considerable elevation on the way to Oberaxen. In total, the hike involves around 340 metres of ascent and 780 metres of descent. After just over two and a half hours, the seven-kilometre hike ends above Flüelen. The destination is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, Flüelen, Gruonbach, is around 1.2 kilometres away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
