01/ Overview
The route
Classic high-altitude trail from the Upper to the Lower Engadine. On the sunny side of the valley along the river Inn, you cross typical Engadine villages, pine and larch forests, crystal-clear streams and lush alpine meadows. The panorama: the gleaming glaciers of the Bernina group and the Engadine Dolomites in the Swiss National Park.
The 165-kilometre multi-day hike through the Engadin begins at the post office in Maloja. The mountain trail traverses open slopes past Grevasalvas, with views of Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana. Above Silvaplana, the route continues to climb and reaches its highest point near Piz Nair Pitschen at around 2,560 m.
Broad pastures and stretches of woodland then alternate before the route reaches Bever and Zuoz. The trail is mostly marked white-red-white and, with its constant ascents and descents, accumulates a total elevation gain of around 7,900 metres. It leads via Chapella and Brail to Zernez, then later through the Lower Engadin to the villages of Guarda and Ardez.
From Sent, the route heads into Val Sinestra, via Vnà and on to Tschlin, with the church of San Plasch at the upper edge of the village. The long final section loses considerable elevation and ends in Vinadi directly by the stop. A good 56 hours of walking time should be allowed for the entire route.
