Senda Segantini, Stage 2/4

This gorgeous hiking route climbs up to the serene and secluded Septimer Pass. The neighbouring pass is home to Europe’s only triple watershed. A varied descent leads across the Val Moraz into the Val Bregaglia, where Giovanni Segantini painted some of his most famous works.

From the Bivio, posta bus stop, the route leads through the village and past the Reformed church. Soon, the mountain trail marked white-red-white climbs across open meadows and pastures. The long ascent requires stamina; after a good two hours, the highest point is reached near Motta da Sett at around 2,310 m.

A little later, the route crosses Pass da Sett. The Septimer Pass links Oberhalbstein with Bergell and separates the Oberhalbstein Alps from the Albula Alps. On the southern side, a long descent leads across open terrain, later between sections of woodland, down to Casaccia. Above the village, the ruins of the church of San Gaudenzio lie close to the route.

Towards the end, the mountain trail climbs once more. Via Cavril, it leads through increasingly wooded terrain to Maloja. After 16 kilometres and a good five and a half hours, the hike ends near the Maloja, Posta bus stop.
