01/ Overview

The route

The leisurely hike proceeds alongside the ice-blue Inn River in the narrow valley bottom. The river winds through the Lower Engadine between huge mountain ranges. On tapered paths, past rock faces and through old coniferous forests, you will come across the ruins of Rohan Castle and the former execution site of Fuorcha.

From Zernez railway station, the route first leads through the village before climbing the hillside. The houses soon give way to open meadows and stretches of woodland. The mountain path gains height quickly, reaching the highest point of the hike at around 1,650 m after just over three kilometres. The route then continues with gentle ups and downs. Fuorcha, directly on the route, was once the execution site for several Lower Engadine municipalities.

Continuing down the valley, open slopes alternate with woodland before the route reaches Susch. In the village, it passes the Reformed Church of San Jon. The path then climbs gently once more and runs above the valley floor through a succession of pastures and wooded sections. The final stretch descends towards Lavin and ends directly at the railway station. Around three and a half hours should be allowed for the twelve kilometres with approximately 440 metres of ascent.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
