01/ Overview
The route
In Lausanne, the ViaJacobi leads from Notre Dame Cathedral over the Escaliers du Marché. In Vidy, it crosses an idyllic park with Roman ruins. Following Lake Geneva's shores, the route remains flat, but its length of 31 kilometres is challenging.
The long hike begins near the Lausanne, Pierre Viret bus stop, at around 520 m and the highest point of the route. Through Lausanne, it passes the Reformed Church of Saint-François on the way to the Esplanade de Montbenon. The continuously waymarked hiking trail then descends through urban neighbourhoods to Lake Geneva, reaching the water at the Port des Pierrettes.
The route continues via Saint-Sulpice to Morges. There it passes the castle, which was built for military purposes in the 13th century and now houses a museum. Beyond Morges, open meadows and pastures alternate with settlements and short stretches of woodland. The castle at Saint-Prex provides another striking landmark.
Via Buchillon, Allaman and Perroy, the trail heads west in gentle undulations. After around 32 km and just under eight hours, Rolle Castle comes into view. Shortly afterwards, the hike ends in Rolle, near the “Rolle, centre ville” bus stop.
