01/ Overview
The route
Very varied, contoured route via Neuburg, Hochwacht Mammern and the Klingszell pilgrimage church, to Stein am Rhein. En route: picturesque views of the end of the Untersee with the old town of Stein, Insel Werd and Hohenklingen Castle.
From Steckborn railway station, the hiking trail leads out of the village and climbs into the gently rolling hinterland of the Untersee. Open meadows, fields and short stretches of woodland alternate along the way. After Glarisegg, the Neuburg ruins lie close to the trail. Parts of the curtain wall and the foundations of the keep are all that remain of the former hilltop castle.
The route continues towards Mammern in a steady succession of ascents and descents. This is followed by the longest climb of the hike. At Hochwacht, the route reaches its highest point at just under 600 metres. A little later, the trail passes directly by the church of Klingenzell. Woodland and open pastures characterise this peaceful high-level section.
Towards the end, the route descends once more to the Untersee. Stein am Rhein comes into view on the lakeshore, where the hike ends after 16 kilometres. A little over four hours should be allowed for this varied route with around 540 metres of ascent. Stein am Rhein railway station is located right by the destination.
