01/ Overview
The route
A level path along the banks of the Rhine with natural riverside areas, past the Wagenhausen Propstei church and St. Katharinental Monastery and Alt Paradies; through the Schaarenwald nature reserve with its historic fortifications and on to Schaffhausen.
From the Stein am Rhein stop, the hiking trail initially leads through the town and close to the shore of Lake Constance. Beyond Wagenhausen, open meadows and fields alternate with a longer stretch of woodland. The highest point, near Wolkensteinerberg at around 430 m, is reached without any significant climb. The route then continues in gentle undulations via Rheinklingen to Diessenhofen.
Around the halfway point, the trail passes through the small town, past the Reformed Church of St. Dionys and the Unterhof. Woodland and open countryside then once again shape the scenery. Via Altparadies and Langwiesen, Schaffhausen gradually draws closer. Towards the end, the surroundings become more urban; the route passes the Church of St. Johann and ends not far from the railway station. At around 22 kilometres, the hike primarily demands stamina, but with a total ascent of only about 240 metres, it remains pleasantly gentle.
