Stammertal Rundweg

This route leads from Oberstammheim to the Schwandegg and Girsberg Castles and back again. This particularly well-kept landscape with it's romantic timber-framed buildings and historic aspects is always well worth a visit.

From the Stammheim bus stop, the twelve-kilometre circuit heads out into the open countryside of the Zürcher Weinland. Farm tracks wind through meadows and fields towards Waltalingen. Near the village, Schloss Schwandegg rises on a hill around 30 metres high; shortly afterwards, the route itself passes directly by the Reformed church. Broad expanses of countryside then alternate with small settlements. Much of the route follows paths outside the marked hiking trail network.

Via Guntalingen and Unterstammheim, the hike approaches the Stammerberg. The highest point of the circuit, at around 490 m, is reached after a little over ten kilometres. Shortly afterwards, the Galluskapelle stands beside the path. Its Romanesque core dates from the 11th or 12th century, while the High Gothic frescoes are from the early 14th century. The circuit finally passes through Oberstammheim before returning to the starting point in Stammheim.
