01/ Overview
The route
From the episcopal city of Chur up to the spa hotel Passugg with its mineral springs. Past the ruins of Strassberg Malix Castle, once a customs station on the Septimer route. Continue to the Churwalden monastery church, across the heights of the Parpaner Höhe and around the Heidsee lake to the original Maiensäss (summer pasture) village of Lenzerheide.
From the station square in Chur, the hike first leads through the Old Town and past St Martin’s Church. The trail then leaves the city and climbs towards Passugg. For long stretches, it follows the Rabiosa. Forest, open slopes and considerable elevation gain define this first section. Most of the route runs along mountain hiking trails marked in white, red and white. Near Malix, the ruins of Strassberg Castle stand directly beside the trail before it reaches Churwalden.
Beyond Churwalden, the ascent continues across meadows and through forest to Parpan. After around 15 kilometres, the highest point is reached near Cresta Sartons at approximately 1,550 m. The terrain now becomes gentler. Via Valbella, the route leads directly alongside the two-part Heidsee, whose shores provide a peaceful contrast to the long ascent. Finally, the trail passes through the Eichhörnchenwald to Lenzerheide. The Lenzerheide/Lai, Altersheim bus stop is close to the destination. A good six hours should be allowed for the 20 kilometres and approximately 1,250 metres of ascent.

How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
